Last Friday night was a rollercoaster of emotions at the rodeo, and as a rodeo photographer, I experienced a heart-pounding adventure that I'll never forget. The evening started off like any other rodeo event, with the crowd eagerly awaiting the adrenaline-fueled action in the arena. My camera was poised and ready to capture the moments of triumph and daring feats of the cowboys.
As the bull riding competition began, I focused my lens on the brave riders who fearlessly mounted the wild beasts. Little did I know that the most heart-stopping moment of the night would be directed at me. As I zoomed in to get a perfect shot, one particularly rambunctious bull decided I was a worthy target.
Suddenly, the bull broke free from its rider and locked its sights on me. Panic surged through my veins as I realized I was in its path. Without a second thought, I dropped my camera (photo above was taken just as I tossed it) and sprinted for safety, my heart pounding in my ears.
In the distance, I spotted a steel bar fence that seemed like a potential escape route. In my mind, I envisioned myself gracefully diving through it like an action hero. But reality is a far cry from the movies. As I neared the fence, my nerves got the best of me, and I clumsily attempted to slide feet-first thru it.
To my dismay, my cowboy fantasy was short-lived as my legs got caught in the bars. The impact was jarring, and I tumbled to the ground, bruising not just my legs but also my ego. The crowd gasped in concern as I scrambled to free myself, and the rodeo staff rushed to assist me and shoo the bull away.
Thankfully, I escaped serious injury, but my pride took a hit that night. As I dusted myself off and retrieved my camera, I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation. I learned a valuable lesson that day – real-life situations don't always play out like the movies.
Despite the bruises, both physical and ego-related, my passion for rodeo photography remains unshaken. The thrill of capturing those heart-stopping moments is what drives me, and I won't let one wild encounter deter me from pursuing my passion.
As I reflect on that unforgettable night, I'm reminded that even behind the camera lens, life can be unpredictable and exhilarating. And the next time I'm faced with a charging bull, I'll make sure to have a safer escape plan in mind – one that doesn't involve trying to mimic action stars. After all, the true thrill lies in the unpredictability of life's adventures.
